Week two of Tuesday Night Overextended was no less exciting than the first.
Despite it being finals week in schools around the country, 55 players showed up to battle for their share of the Overextended prize pool. The matches were intense, and as players in the tournament fought on and a growing sideline crowd watched, player began to rise to the top. As the day grew deeper, eight unique archetypes were finally left standing: Living End, Scapeshift, B/W Midrange, Mono Blue Twelvepost, Affinity, Dragonstorm, Hateful Zoo, and Combo Elves.
And so the top 8 began.
Flea08 with Affinity had a close match with Fated_Phoenix’s Dragonstorm in the quarterfinals, but a great draw from Flea in game three left Phoenix on one life on his combo deck’s fundamental turn – and with only a Shivan Reef in play to jumpstart his rituals.
Meanwhile, Mage_Slayer was in a tight match three game match against Zahori’s Mono Blue 12post deck. Though Zahori took game one, Slayer found his gamebreaking singleton Boseiju, Who Shelters All in game two and the sheltering land managed to carry Mage_Slayer to victory. After a hard fought game three, Mage_Slayer managed to take the match.
Though it did provide Primoc Escapee what is likely its first constructed top 8 appearance ever, Dirtyduck’s Living End deck fell to Ben Sw with combo elves, and, despite maindeck Sable Stags, Ranth’s Hateful Zoo just wasn’t hateful enough to defeat Theiz’s B/W deck, which was chock full of removal and disruption.
The top four saw Flea08 quickly blast past Theiz’s ill-prepared B/W deck after the latter mulliganed into oblivion, and Mage_Slayer managed to just barely sneak by Ben Sw’s combo elves with some well-timed Firespouts. After 6 rounds and 2 elimination matches, Flea08 and Mage_Slayer found themselves in the finals.
The players shuffled up, steeled themselves for the matchup at hand… and Mage_Slayer annihilated Flea08’s Affinity deck almost effortlessly. Moment’s Peace bought Slayer all the time he needed in the first game, and then two copies of Ancient Grudge pulverized Affinity’s board state. When a last-ditch Duress by Flea saw a hand of triple Scapeshift, everyone knew it was over.
Congratulations to Mage_Slayer, the second Tuesday Night Overextended champion!
After two weeks, we’ve seen a ton of possibilities for Overextended. From two different varieties of 12post control to new-age Madness to updated Gifts Rock, there’s already been a lot of innovation – and it’s only just beginning. By halfway through the tournament players were already talking in the Overextended chat room about what they’d like to try out, and even the eventual champion, Mage_Slayer, noted after the event that he wanted to see how the deck worked with Burning Wish.
Could this Twelvepost deck be the control deck everyone has been waiting for, or is the ‘Tron deck in the top 16 the right way to go? Will the prominence of combo lead to Mental Missteps, Chalice of the Voids, Mana Mazes, and other similar cards rising in popularity? And with two red decks teetering right on the cusp of top 8, will next week be the week they break through? There’s seven days of theorizing and playtesting in front of us – we’ll find out the results on Tuesday!

Although it didn’t get there in the end, I thought Optimus’s All-In-Red was the coolest deck I played in my six rounds. It just seemed like a very cool take on the card pool available :D
I’ve already started piecing together at least 4 new deck ideas for next week… so many ideas!
What can I say, I am awesome. But seriously, I really wish I wasn’t so dedicated to making AIR work because this format has so many fun and good ideas. I think now that I have all the cards AIR should need, I am going to work on a sidedeck to prepare.
Zero Dark Depths!
No pure Depths, though it’s worth noting that the BUG Giftsatog deck has Dark Depths in it. I’m guessing it’s poor showing week one moved some people away from playing it.
Wish I had more time to test prior to events. Built a deck to combat Elves, affinity, and mono-red this week and run into Living End and Dragonstorm. This format is almost as diverse as Legacy.
Sweet, a mono-blue 12-post list. i’ve been working on my own version (and still unsure if 12-post or Urzatron is better). I’m not playing any of the Eldrazi tough…I’ll have to test that. I just went with straight artifact beats.
I played against both, and judging solely the manabases, the 12-post seemed faster. The lifegain from the locusts also hurt, as an aggro player.
Yeah, I was really impressed by Glimmerpost’s life gain for stabilizing against beatdown. It’s pretty cool to see a Glimmerpost deck work out.
My monoblue Tron deck wasn’t in the archetype listing! I definitely wasn’t playing Posts…
I just went back and looked at your list. You had Izzet Signet and Fire/Ice, so at a glance I put you down as UR ‘Tron. I suppose that’s not really true, so I’ve changed it to Mono Blue ‘Tron. :)
Excellent format diversity, two tournaments in a row. Stay tuned for my article coming out tomorrow/later this wekk about the state of the metagame with these two events in the book.
Some quick talking points:
1) Combo and aggro are frontrunning, but NOT dominant
2) No one archetype or deck is out of control
3) Historically, Overextended represents a huge range of past decks and strategies

Great Tourney Gavin!!!!!!!!! Cant wait till next week and the crazy brews me and Chrandersen decided to come up with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing tourney. That’s the most fun I’ve had playing Magic in a long while, I really hope WotC picks this up.
Man I couldn’t even crack T32?? What a letdown. :P
For posterity—I think that’s the word—Gavin forgot to post two changes I had made to my deck. I took both Quest for Ancient Secrets out.
Main: -1 Quest for Ancient Secrets, +1 Honden of Life’s Web
Side: -1 Quest for Ancient Secrets, +1 Celestial Purge.
Now the real question….do I have to stones to do this again with some revision?
Guess we’ll find out in six days.
Could you post the list to the 52 lands deck? That looks intense.
Haha, sure thing. :)

Whilst I love the deck, i’m a brewer. That means i’ll likely not run this list next week, instead favouring a new concoction. If someone wants to run this deck for a bit of fun, just contact me on MODO (Nerdoftheyear) and i’ll lend you all the above cards :)
I made my UB Tron list about 10 minutes before the tourney closed. I really like the reanimator strategy but the mana base is awful and I need a way to deal with Elves.
Do you mind editing the original post to put Final Standings at the bottom like last week?
I didn’t really like how long it made the page last time and how it ended up looking. What did you want to know off of it? :)
I just like keeping track of my own progress, and seeing other people who have attended these events over and over. I can understand the aesthetic value of not putting it there, though, so I guess I’ll get used to the more MTGO-esque 3-1s and 4-0s only. :)
Out of curiosity, what did the other Sunrise Combo deck look like (the one that was not mine)?
Sure, no problem. Here was his list:

What did the Protean Hulk deck look like this week, Gavin?
Same deal as last week. Dryad Arbors and Hedron Crabs! :)
So does anyone know whether the tron control lists or the twelve post control lists are better? What do you think Gavin?
See Wizards, I only saw 2 affinity decks. No need to restrict artifact lands.
In their defense, we also have 3 blocks and a core set extra at our disposal for answers/”better” decks. (better as not in stronger but in more diverse)
